Possessions #1 - My Glasses.
There is nothing I own more uniquely me. And quite frankly, I don’t feel like myself until I put them on.
I have worn glasses ever since 7th grade, and every time I’ve gone in to get new glasses, no matter what I told myself ahead of time, I always ended up picking thick black frame glasses. Even though they’re always too heavy and put a good dent in the bridge of my nose, I just can’t resist them. Perhaps it’s because I was raised on Buddy Holly.
About a year and a half ago, I started looking around at every eyewear store in town, determined to find some lightweight glasses I liked. But there was nothing that said “Wesley Kirk” that didn’t also say “I will fuck up your nose, and you will like it!” Then one day, at some rundown Lenscrafters in the Grapevine Outlet Mall, I saw them. I was drawn to them like a moth to a flame. I would have bought them right than and there if I had my prescription.
A week later I was able to go to my glasses place, Eyes Nouveau, where there is a guy named James that can pick glasses for people like Ollivander can pick wands for wizards. I had to custom order them from the Ray Ban catalog, and saw that I could get them in red. I honestly debated getting red Ray Bans for 5 minutes, but then decided I’d get real tired having to match all my clothes to my red glasses.
As soon as my glasses arrived, I ran out and took photos.
To this day I still find it strange when people ask me if they’re real. And I thoroughly enjoy meeting people with equally interesting glasses and getting to hear / say “I like your glasses too.”
